Union Cemetery is located on the Northern outskirts of Pomeroy. The cemetery seems to come alive in the spring and summer with beautiful blossoming fruit trees, stunning evergreens, and a slightly rolling terrain. Farmland flanks both the north and west side of the cemetery and off in the distance you can see the wind energy farm.

Union Cemetery has a special section called Baby Land located on the west side of the Cemetery. This area is surrounded by a low heartshaped hedge with a walkway leading to a large monument with the names of the children buried within the heart of this small cemetery.

There are many tombstones from the late 1800's. Every year the Historical Society puts on a cemetery walk performance featuring true stories of some of the people that have passed. In the spring of 2008 a directory of the cemetery was erected with a small rest area where friends and family can gather and locate their loved ones or ancestors. This rest area has three directories to assist with your search.

To the left are a few tombstones of victims from the Tornado of July 6, 1893

If you want more information about the purchase of plots in Union Cemetery, please call or visit City Hall. Sarah or Deb can assist you or your family with those arrangements. Cemetery lots cost $125.00.

The City of Pomeroy would like to thank all the people who donated time and money to make the Union Cemetery Directory a success. The names on the plaque are memorialized by families who gave monetarily toward the directory. Cindy and Gordon Loots and Bob and Marlene Schossow spent numerous hours entering names and burial places into a data base and then organizing that information into the directory and creating the accompanying map. Dennis Ehn, Paul Johnson, Bob and Mark Schossow had a part in putting up the directories, laying bricks and mounting the plaque onto the rock. City employees Deb Casey, Kenny Rhea and Brad Duitsman assisted in the project as well. Money was awarded in 2009 to the City of Pomeroy from the Calhoun County Foundation Grant for two large self-watering flower pots. New trees were planted at the cemetery with help from the "Trees Please" program sponsored by MidAmerican Energy. The "Go Green" school group and junior high students planted the trees and flowers around town. A special thank you goes out to Council member Cindy Loots for organizing the project. She spent many hours getting the directory ready for print, ordering the materials, and organizing the work force.
